The Desire to Learn and Grow

Almost without exception, people who show up in my therapy office are there because they want change. Change in themselves, change in another person, or change in a particular situation or circumstance.

To some extent, they have reached the end of their rope and their own abilities and are seeking some type of insight or advice about how to “fix” their problem. Sometimes they come alone, and sometimes they come with a partner or a family member. They want answers and hope I can offer them guidance and a viable solution.

The Power of Powerlessness

What they may not know is the profound value of having found the end of their own efforts. For it is only when we become powerless that we paradoxically find the beginning of our solution. It is our humility and willingness that prepare and drive us to seek help, listen, and apply counsel.

And while I would love to claim some kind of brilliant knowledge and capability for leading people through change, the reality is that most of the determining factors in therapy are already decided before people even set foot in my office.

Change is a Personal Decision

You see, I really can’t change anything. Change is a personal decision. If a client wants to change, I can only provide guidance and knowledge, which they will either receive, apply, or discard. If they have yet to find a place of humility and willingness, therapy will likely be a difficult experience. However, if they have the desire to learn and grow and have decided they are willing to place their focus on their own contributions to their current state of distress, the likelihood of real change is exceptionally high.

What I can offer potential clients is a supportive and safe environment, guidance, knowledge, and the accumulated insight that comes from years of lived experience, training, education, and practice. I love the process of learning, growth, and change. It has shaped my life, and I truly enjoy helping others apply new insights and ways of thinking and being to their own relationships.

Together, we can help you learn effective ways to resolve conflict, build intimacy, forgive offenses, heal wounds, and build resilience. As partners, we can find the source of your emotional and mental distress and heal the painful root problems that contribute to ongoing relational upsets and disconnections.
